Situated at the southern end of the Temple Mount, the small spur - known as the Ophel - is the site of the original city of Jerusalem. Originally it seems to have been called Jebus and, possibly, Salem. The term "Jebus" originates from the Jebusite people who occupied this city. Contrary to previous understanding, Jerusalem seems to have been an important city from the earliest of times. Archaeological and ancient textual evidence suggest that there were three dominant centres west of the Jordan during the mid to latter parts of the Bronze Age: Jerusalem, Shechem and Hazor. This small city, hardly the size of a football pitch, seems to have dominated at least the whole of the Judean hill country, including Bethel and Hebron. |
